The smarmy, stingy, chambray-shirted Don Angel of Worldwide Business Group is a terrifying new breed of office tyrant poised to send shivers down the spines of wage slaves everywhere. Peroxide-haired with a smeared-on grin, he runs his shonky operation. . . But something is missing from his delusional corporate world: an employee. Enter Ray Leonard, the shattered remains of a features writer for The Australian. After six years battling depression and chronic fatigue syndrome, Ray just wants a job, any job. His desperation and Don's stupendous immorality make for some caustically funny television.
So, I wasn't sure if I was going to watch Very Small Business; cringe-comedy really isn't my thing, apart from The Office (UK version), which I had to persist with, and only came to love gradually. But it seems one of the characters is billed as having CFS, and I'm definitely going to catch it now. I'm interested to see how they deal with it. The "and depression" part is a bit worrying; they're not the same thing, of course, but so often get mushed together by people who aren't well versed in the illness, and sometimes even by those who are. But it's not often that people with, or recovered from, CFS are used in Film, TV or fiction, so it's definitly a must-see now.

9am with David & Kim - Interview with Dr Lewis & Imogen Newhouse

During Awareness week, Channel Ten did an interview with Dr Don Lewis and a young CFS patient Imogen Newhouse. Dr Lewis has been my CFS doctor for many years. While the information about the science and treatment may not have come across very clearly, that's more a feature of the illness itself, as there's too much involved to fit it into a short tv segment. I thought both interviewees were great, though, with the hosts taking it seriously (with none of the usual cliches like "yuppie flu" etc) and asking good questions.

CFS: Payback Explained

I've never been great at explaining my CFS to the people around me; there's so much to it, and only so much people can take in, even when I'm being eloquent about it. All too often I'm not.

Thankfully, there's people out there who are much better at it than I, so every now and then, I'm going to post links to blogposts and articles, videos or audio, that make the symptoms, challenges and lifestyle changes required of CFS clearer.

First up, Payback Explained shows what a juggling act even simple things can be for someone with CFS. My current symptom level isn't as serious as greenwords is at the time of this post (though I've been there), but payback still bites.

Should I write about that day I fell ill, some time after morning coffee but before lunch? Or perhaps the moment when my mother, fighting breast cancer, and I looked in each other’s eyes and recognized that we understood each other in a new way? What about how I felt as I sat in the audience at the National Press Club launch of the CFS public awareness campaign? Or the excitement of attending my first meeting as a member of the CFIDS Association’s Board of Directors? The problem is that none of these events, significant as they are, define my entire experience of living with CFS."
